One of the basic things you first learn when crocheting is how to crochet in an line or row and how to crochet in a circle or round.  Above are the beginning steps to crocheting a rnd or circle.  For this example: Chain 3 (1st photo), sl st to form a ring (2nd photo), ch-1, work 12 hdc in ring, sl st top beg hdc (3rd photo).
The other method for crocheting in the round is to make an oval.  Instead of chaining and sl st to form a ring to work in you make a row of chain or foundation of chains to work across and then around.  This is called working in the bottom or the foundation chain or working in the bottom of the stitches just made.  In this example chain 10 (1st photo), hdc 3rd ch from hook (last photo)
